Whether or not you want to take the chance that the kid your reading to will revolt, I guess depends on whether or not they're your child or you can hand them back - or if they're old enough to read it themselves. I have no doubt most kids will love it though. I find a lot of things these days fly straight over my head that my niece and nephew think is hysterical. It probably doesn't help reading this as an adult. I liked parts of this, other parts just baffled me. With her red plaited pigtails and vibrant outlook on life she is a colourful icon and a fun and interesting character to enjoy. On the other hand, she's probably also the type of child most other children love. ![]() Any child that answers the question of 'why are you walking backwards?' with 'don't we live in a free country? Can't a person walk any way she likes? - is the type of child that would drive most adults mad. Pippi Longstocking is the type of child that would drive a parent mad. They get more than they bargained for when they find that Pippi Longstocking has moved in with her monkey, Mr Nilsson and her horse that lives on the porch because he gets in the way in the kitchen and doesn't feel comfortable in the living room. Annika and Thomas desperately wish that someone their age would move in next door so they can have a playmate. ![]() ![]() ![]() I enjoyed learning a bit about how people like Hammy Bean live. I did like the emphasis on representing a character with blindness though it was moving to see the author’s end note about growing up with her mother, who dealt with blindness. However, as I mentioned, the others weren’t that interesting or well-rounded. The other main characters, Hammy Bean and Dax, were fun and had some good character development of their own. I liked Ada Ru well enough she is a sweet protagonist with a good narrative voice. I also dislike having to read dialogue that is spelled to emphasize the dialect, so this on top of the already unfamiliar Scottish colloquialisms made my experience reading this a little difficult. ![]() ![]() I enjoyed the glimpse into Scottish life, but the characters other than the main three seemed very one-note, and often stereotypical. This was a fairly cute, if slightly predictable, story. However, as she makes new friends and learns about this new place, she discovers that maybe her summer isn’t ruined after all. ![]() Ada Ru is not thrilled, especially when she hears there is a monster living in the loch.
